Sellwood Band

Stores like Wally's, Beacock, and Music & Arts carry instruments that are generally higher quality than the ones we have at Sellwood — though ours are just fine! Most stores also offer a rent-to-own policy, meaning any rental payments you've made can be applied toward purchasing the instrument outright.

Beacock and Music & Arts both offer online rentals where they deliver the instrument directly to Sellwood, so you don't have to drive out to the store.

There are a limited number of instruments at Sellwood available to use for free, with priority given to students with financial need. The rental form is available as a digital form (preferred) or a printable version. Paper forms are also available in the band room for those without internet access at home.

Regular maintenance is the responsibility of the student, but repairs due to normal wear are handled by the district at no cost. Lost instruments are subject to a replacement fee.

These instruments are shared across all PPS band programs — every student who rents from a music store means one more district instrument is available for a family with financial need.

There are many places to find instruments and not all of them are trustworthy. If you can, avoid instruments from non-music retailers — think big box stores, large membership stores, or the two-day shipping people. These instruments tend to be of inferior quality and can hinder student success. Many cannot be repaired by any music store due to a lack of available parts, leading to greater cost down the road.

If you find an instrument on Craigslist or eBay, Mr. Patterson is happy to look at the listing — just email him the link. If something looks too good to be true, it probably is.
