Intermediate Band is a year-long course for students with one year of prior middle school band experience. The class focuses on refining individual technique, expanding music literacy, and developing ensemble performance skills through intermediate-level repertoire. Intermediate Band students perform in two concerts (Winter and Spring), three parades (the Monster March Halloween parade in Sellwood, the St. Johns or Jr. Rose Parade depending on the year, and the Duniway Parade in June), the PPS Middle School Band Festival, and the (optional) Solo/Ensemble Festival. Intermediate Band prepares students for Advanced Band the following year — no audition is necessary to progress from Intermediate Band to Advanced Band.

Traditional wind band instrumentation is used: flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinets, saxophones, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, string bass, and concert percussion.
